This weekend, 16, 17 and 18 June, the UVVA - Universo dos Vinhos Verdes Amarante took place. During the event, AJTS Vinhos Gentilis Grande Reserva 2021 was awarded first place in the 2nd edition of the UVVA Awards.
The winning wine is made in Gatão, next to the River Tâmega. It is a blend of several white grape varieties, including Azal and Arinto, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. The wine in question also won in the "Best White Wine" and "Best Amarante" categories.
The wines Portal da Calçada Cuvée Prestige Bruto (undated sparkling wine made in Amarante by Calçada Wines) and Sem Igual Bruto Natural 2017 (Lousada, 100 Igual project) won the "Best Sparkling Wine" honour. The "Best Rosé Wine" award went to Sem Igual Oaked 2021 (Lousada, 100 Igual) and Quinta da Lixa Reserva 2016 (Lixa, Felgueiras, Quinta da Lixa) won in the "Best Red Wine" segment.
In this second edition, the UVVA awards evaluated a total of around 70 samples (sparkling wines, whites, rosés and reds) from the producers represented at the event. The tasting session, in which the wines were assessed in a blind tasting, took place on the morning of 16 June at the Dolmen Space.
The jury was made up of Bernardo Pinho (sommelier Hotel Octant, Douro), Celeste Pereira (representative of the Chamber of Tasters of the Viticulture Commission of the Vinho Verde Region), Gabriel Monteiro (sommelier The Largo Hotel, Porto), Ivo Granja (sommelier The Largo Hotel, Porto), José João Santos, Luis Costa and Marc Barros (Revista de Vinhos).
